BY AMY ELLEN SCHLEIF

AMY IS INTERESTED IN CREATING SPACES THAT EXPLORE THE IMPACT THAT OUR EMOTIONAL STATES AND SPIRITUALITY HAVE ON OUR PERCEPTION. THIS BODY OF WORK PURSUES THIS EXPLORATION THROUGH THE USE OF COLOUR LAYERING, REFLECTIONS AND THE PASSAGE OF TIME. THE WORKS BEGIN TO REVEAL THEMSELVES OVER A PERIOD OF TIME. SLOWLY THE COLOURS REVEAL THEMSELVES CREATING DEPTH WITHIN THE WORKS. AS THE VIEWER’S PHYSICAL PERSPECTIVE CHANGES THE REFLECTIONS WORK TO HIDE AREAS AND LIGHT PENETRATES TO EXPOSE NEW COLOURS, RESULTING IN A CHANGE IN PERCEPTION OF THE WORK.

IN ADDITION, EACH WORK EXPLORES THE INDEFINABILITY OF SPIRITUAL SPACE, LEAVING THE VIEWER FREE TO DEFINE DETAILS OF THE IMAGE THEY SEE, COMING AWAY WITH A FEELING OR ESSENCE OF A SPIRITUAL SPACE. THE IDEAS OF PEACE, SERENITY AND PURITY ARE CAPTURED IN THE SHIFTING COLOURS AND “OUT OF FOCUS” SENTIMENT CREATED WITHIN THE SPACE.

THE USE OF RECLAIMED MATERIALS FURTHER UNDERPINS THE CONCEPTUAL NATURE OF THE WORKS, BY PROVIDING A FAMILIAR VEHICLE TO EXPERIENCE THE IDEAS OF PEACE, SERENITY AND PURITY. THE THOUGHT THAT THESE STATES OF MIND CAN BE ACCESSED IN THE MOST ORDINARY OF EVERYDAY OBJECTS, THE WINDOW OR DOOR.
